Almaden Valley; A Rich, Diverse and Beautiful Community
As a proud resident of one of San Jose's most treasured communities, I realize we are all so
fortunate that our fabulous community on the outskirts of Silicon Valley has more to offer than
most communties, attracting so many people from all over the world. In addition to its award-
winning schools, parks, libraries and shops, Almaden Valley is also home to Historic Quicksilver Park is an incredible jewel. lmaden Valley bedside community at one time the 2nd largest Quicksilver producing
mine in the world, active for over 125 yrs. Over 83 million pounds of quicksilver was produced for
everything from Civil War explosives to Victorian wine glass, to 20th century battery cells and
thermometers. Prior to this, the area was used by the Ohlone Indians for the deep red mercury-
bearing rock, Cinnabar. But enough of the park’s history! This diverse county park, located in
Silicon Valley boasts 4147 acres, miles of hiking (part of The City of San Jose’s Healthy Trails Initiative),
biking and horse trails, a mining museum, a variety of plants and animals, and fabulous views of
Almaden, Silicon Valley, Loma Prieta, Mt. Hamilton, Mt. Umunhum.Having this treasure within
minutes of your backyard is only one of the benefits to moving into this desired community.
As with any growing community, changes take place and residents have differing opinions.
Some of the issues facing our community are:
The proposed planned development of the Almaden Valley Urban Reserve & Coyote Valley
Development have forced the Almaden Valley Community Association to come up with a statement
of urban preservation. They as well as most residents feel that high density quarters should remain
downtown and that a large development would be prohibitive due to logistics and traffic concerns.
This plan was recently scrapped.
Other issues that face or community include dog parks and soccer parks, which put residents at odds
with those visiting the parks that have limited parking facilities.
In addition, the largest Whole Foods to date is expected to open in Almaden in 2010, a much-
anticipated event.
One neighborhood in Almaden is TJ Martin.
